Ticket Terms & Fine Print

All Ticket Sales

By purchasing a ticket, you acknowledge and agree to the terms of the selected Mahj Atelier program. Registration is valid only for the date, time, location, and program purchased. Please review your selection carefully before completing your registration.

Unless otherwise stated, cancellations made at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled program may be eligible for a refund or credit. Cancellations made within 48 hours of the program, late arrivals, and no-shows are non-refundable. Tickets may not be transferred to another date, session, program, or participant without prior approval from Mahj Atelier.

Mahj Atelier reserves the right to adjust table assignments, groupings, instructors, program format, or other operational details as reasonably necessary to provide the best experience for the group.

Programs may be rescheduled or canceled due to insufficient enrollment, venue circumstances, instructor availability, weather, or other circumstances beyond our reasonable control. If Mahj Atelier cancels a program, registered participants will be offered a refund, credit, rescheduled date, or other appropriate accommodation.

Open Play

Open Play is intended for players who have already learned the fundamentals of American Mahjong and are able to participate in a game independently without ongoing instruction. Open Play is not a lesson or Guided Play session, and instructors cannot provide continuous individual assistance during play.

Mahj Atelier organizes tables based upon attendance and the overall needs of the group. While every effort is made to create full four-player tables, registration does not guarantee placement at a four-person table. Attendance, cancellations, late arrivals, or other circumstances may require alternate table configurations, including three-player or Siamese-style play. Mahj Atelier reserves the right to organize and adjust table assignments as needed to create the best possible playing experience for the group.

Players are expected to follow current National Mah Jongg League rules and standards and to bring a current NMJL card unless otherwise indicated. Mahjong sets and gameplay equipment are provided by Mahj Atelier unless otherwise stated.

We ask all players to arrive on time. If you expect to arrive late, please notify Mahj Atelier in advance, as accurate attendance is important when organizing complete tables.

Mahj 101 | Beginner Lessons

Mahj 101 is designed for true beginners as well as players who would benefit from relearning the fundamentals of American Mahjong.

During this introductory lesson, students are taught the foundational elements of the game, including the tiles, National Mah Jongg League card, Charleston, rules, gameplay, and introductory strategy. Our goal is for students to absorb the fundamentals and begin playing the game during their very first session.

Individual learning speeds vary. Completion of Mahj 101 does not guarantee independent proficiency after one lesson. Players who would benefit from additional support are encouraged to continue into Guided Play before registering for Open Play.

All instructional materials, teaching aids, lesson formats, and materials provided by Mahj Atelier are intended solely for the registered participant's personal educational use. They may not be reproduced, distributed, published, sold, used to teach others, or used for commercial purposes without prior written permission from Mahj Atelier.

Guided Play

Guided Play is designed for players who have already completed a beginner lesson or otherwise understand the basic fundamentals of American Mahjong but are not yet comfortable playing entirely independently.

Guided Play is not a repeat of Mahj 101. Participants play complete games while Mahj Atelier instructors circulate among the tables to answer questions, reinforce rules, assist with the NMJL card and Charleston, clarify gameplay, and help players develop confidence and independence.

Guided Play is intentionally designed as the bridge between learning and Open Play. Participants may attend as many Guided Play sessions as they feel they need before transitioning to independent play.

Multi-Week Series Registrations

Registration for a Mahj Atelier multi-week series reserves your place for the entire series. Once a series has begun, series registrations are non-refundable, non-transferable, and cannot be prorated for missed sessions.

Missed sessions do not qualify for refunds, credits, makeups, or transfers to another Mahj Atelier program or future series. Because staffing, table configurations, materials, refreshments, prizes, and other program expenses are planned based upon advance registration, the full series fee remains applicable regardless of individual attendance.

If Mahj Atelier cancels an individual session within a series, we will communicate directly with registered participants regarding a rescheduled date, credit, or other appropriate accommodation.

Community Standards

Mahj Atelier is built around community, inclusion, and respect around the table. Participants are expected to treat fellow players, instructors, venue staff, and guests with courtesy and patience, regardless of experience or skill level.

Mahj Atelier reserves the right to refuse participation or future registration when an individual's conduct is disruptive, disrespectful, unsafe, or materially interferes with the experience of other participants.

Photography & Media

Mahj Atelier events may occasionally be photographed or recorded for marketing, promotional, website, and social media purposes. If you prefer not to be photographed or recorded, please notify a Mahj Atelier team member upon arrival, and we will make reasonable efforts to honor your request.

By completing your registration, you acknowledge that you have reviewed and agree to the applicable Mahj Atelier ticket terms and program policies above.

Mahj Atelier

Community Code of Conduct

At Mahj Atelier, we believe the best part of Mahjong is what happens around the table. Our community is built on kindness, inclusion, respect, good sportsmanship, and a shared love of the game.

Every person who joins us contributes to the experience of the table. By participating in a Mahj Atelier lesson, Guided Play, Open Play session, series, event, or community gathering, you agree to uphold the following standards.

Respect Around the Table

All players are expected to treat fellow participants, instructors, Mahj Atelier team members, venue staff, and guests with courtesy and respect.

Mahjong is a social game, and players will naturally have different personalities, playing styles, speeds, and levels of experience. Patience and grace are expected. Correcting, criticizing, embarrassing, belittling, intimidating, or speaking disrespectfully to another player is not acceptable.

A more experienced player should never make another player feel that they do not belong at the table.

A Welcoming Table

Mahj Atelier is committed to creating an environment where people feel welcome and comfortable participating regardless of age, background, identity, experience level, or skill.

Exclusionary behavior, bullying, harassment, discrimination, personal attacks, intentionally making another participant feel unwelcome, or creating a hostile or uncomfortable environment will not be tolerated.

You do not have to become friends with everyone at your table. You do have to treat everyone with respect.

Rules, Disagreements & Table Etiquette

Mahj Atelier follows current National Mah Jongg League rules and standards for American Mahjong unless a program specifically states otherwise.

Questions and differences in rule interpretation should be directed to a Mahj Atelier instructor or team member. Players should not argue, raise their voices, repeatedly challenge another player, or allow a disagreement about gameplay to become personal.

When a Mahj Atelier instructor or team member is asked to resolve a gameplay question during one of our programs, their determination will govern play for that session so that the game can continue.

Mistakes happen. They are part of playing Mahjong. They should be addressed with courtesy, and then the table should move forward.

Different Levels of Play

Open Play includes players with varying levels of experience. While Open Play requires the ability to play independently, independent does not mean expert.

Players may take different amounts of time to choose a hand, make decisions, complete the Charleston, or recognize a call. Reasonable differences in pace and ability are part of community play.

Players seeking a particular level or pace of play may communicate that preference to Mahj Atelier, and we will make reasonable efforts to accommodate requests when possible. However, registration does not guarantee placement with specific players, friends, skill levels, or tables.

Table Assignments

Mahj Atelier reserves the right to determine and modify table assignments based upon attendance, experience levels, group dynamics, late arrivals, cancellations, and the overall needs of the program.

Participants may request to play with particular people or at a particular skill level, and we will accommodate requests when reasonably possible. However, no participant has the authority to determine who may or may not sit at a Mahj Atelier table.

Mahj Atelier may move or reassign players when we believe doing so will create a more comfortable, equitable, or enjoyable experience for the group.

Sportsmanship

Celebrate the Mahjongs. Enjoy the competition. Cheer each other on.

Winning and strategy are part of the fun, but the experience of the people sitting around the table matters more than the outcome of any hand.

Poor sportsmanship, repeated complaining, hostile reactions to losing, gloating at another player's expense, intentionally disrupting play, or behavior that consistently diminishes the experience of the table is inconsistent with our community standards.

Respect for Instructors & Staff

Mahj Atelier instructors and team members are there to facilitate the experience, answer questions, organize tables, and maintain consistency across our programs.

Participants are expected to respect staff directions regarding gameplay, seating, timing, venue procedures, safety, and community conduct.

Concerns about another participant, instructor, or Mahj Atelier decision should be brought privately to a Mahj Atelier team member, rather than confronted publicly at the table or discussed in a manner that disrupts the group.

Privacy & Personal Boundaries

Our tables are naturally social, and friendships often develop through our community. Participants should nevertheless respect the personal boundaries and privacy of others.

Contact information, photographs, personal circumstances, private communications, or conversations learned through Mahj Atelier should not be shared or used inappropriately.

Concerns, Grievances & Public Communications

Mahj Atelier is committed to addressing concerns directly, respectfully, and privately. If a participant has a concern regarding another player, an instructor, a Mahj Atelier team member, a venue, table assignment, program decision, or their overall experience, we ask that the matter be brought directly to Mahj Atelier so that we have a fair opportunity to understand and address it.

Participants are expected not to use Mahj Atelier programs, community relationships, participant information, or private disputes as a means of publicly targeting, harassing, disparaging, or encouraging others to target Mahj Atelier, its team members, venues, or fellow participants, including through social media, community groups, online forums, group texts, or other public or semi-public channels.

Private disagreements should remain private. Participants may not share another participant's personal information, private communications, photographs, or details of a confidential complaint or internal matter without appropriate permission.

Nothing in this Code of Conduct is intended to prevent anyone from expressing a truthful opinion, sharing an honest personal experience, reporting unlawful conduct, communicating with appropriate authorities, or exercising any other right protected by law. Rather, we ask that concerns arising within our community first be brought directly to Mahj Atelier whenever reasonably possible so that they can be addressed thoughtfully, fairly, and with respect for everyone involved.

Retaliation, online harassment, threats, knowingly false statements, coordinated public targeting, or continued conduct intended to intimidate or harm another member of the community may result in suspension or removal from Mahj Atelier programming.

When Conduct Becomes a Problem

Mahj Atelier reserves the right to address conduct that, in our reasonable judgment, interferes with the safety, comfort, dignity, or enjoyment of another participant or the community as a whole.

Depending upon the circumstances, Mahj Atelier may speak privately with a participant, provide a warning, change a table assignment, ask a participant to leave a session, or suspend or revoke participation in future Mahj Atelier programs.

Serious misconduct may result in immediate removal without a prior warning.

When a participant is removed from a program because of a violation of this Code of Conduct, registration fees may be forfeited and no refund or credit will be required.

Our Standard

Mahjong has rules. Community has standards.

We ask everyone who joins us to remember that every confident player was once learning, every table is made better by kindness, and the best player in the room is ultimately the one everyone hopes will sit at their table.

Our mission is simple:

Build community, one table at a time.

By registering for or participating in a Mahj Atelier program, you acknowledge that you have read, understand, and agree to abide by this Community Code of Conduct.
